The van der Velden HDS rudder is a single blade rudder, rectangular in shape. A broad plate is fitted to the upper and lower edges. The special hydro-dynamic shape of the van der Velden HDS rudder gives the turning moment usually associated with a multi-bladed configuration. |
|
The rudder is approximately 40% balanced and may either be spade type or carried on upper and lower pintle bearings. The rudder stock is welded integrally with the blade or flange or taper mounted. A portable plate may be incorporated to permit the withdrawal of the tailshaft. Positioning The rudder should be fitted directly behind the propeller at a distance of a quarter to half the diameter from the trailing edge. The upper plate may be omitted when used with a propeller tunnel and the lower plate positioned specially so as not to impair the slipstream. Propeller diameter dictates the size of the rudder which may be fitted to new or existing vessels without difficulty. On craft possessing inherent good maneuverability e.g. tugs, it is sometimes possible to reduce the size of the van der Velden HDS rudder fitted. However, a vessel already fitted with propulsion nozzles may have difficulty in fitting a van der Velden HDS rudder of the optimum size due to the existing scantlings. With nozzles, the van der Velden HDS rudder should be fitted adjacent to the orifices. |
